I love easy days. There will always be a part of me that doesn't want to work too hard. Compared to the last week or so, today was easy - flat running on some of my favorite trails on a beautiful sunny morning with low mileage. But I need to keep reminding myself that it's still a day to work on my form and to pay attention to the sore spots that need to be worked on later. Easy days are not lazy days.
01/10:
4 miles, No time, half on the Adidas Trail. Right calf felt tight but loosened up when I stopped to stretch it after 3.
A place to keep track of my high's and low's through training for marathons and running through life.

Sunny Mornings
The sun seemed to call me out of bed this morning into my run. I knew the forecast is rain today (don't worry it's coming), but this morning greeted my tired face with (cold) blue skies and sunshine. I'm glad I had already planned to run along the river. Crossing over the bridges by campus as the sun is peeking is so beautiful I have to stop running and take a deep breath of creation. It fills my heart for the day.
Physically, I felt pretty good. Right at the beginning of the run, my right knee did that weird twinge of pain it throws off sometimes - especially playing basketball. But it didn't bother me the rest of the run. I think I was able to hold my form relatively cleanly for the 5 miles, except maybe up the hill through campus. I busted out the foam roller and a rolling pin at home and worked some kinks out of my ITBs and my quads. I had some mega knots on the inside of the quads above the knees - really tender. I tend to neglect those areas but given my knee problems in the past, I need to make sure I work all the muscle groups around the area. Right calf was knotted up pretty tight but after some stretching and rolling, it loosened right up.

Pushing through hard days,
I've got 4 weeks until my 12 week training/countdown begins to the Eugene Marathon (April 29). I've run the whole and the half once and I love running races in Eugene. It's a relatively flat course and running through the city where I grew up and still live.
My training plan is more difficult than any I've pursued in the past, and I need to get up to speed fast. I'm hoping I will be ready in 4 weeks. Running lately, especially through the holidays when I've eaten too much crap or running on ice, the thing that I keep remembering is this:

"Running on the hard days makes race day not as hard."
There's nothing easy about running marathons. But not running through the rain and cold, the tiredness, the low spirits, makes race day easier and more fun.
01/07:
7 miles, No time (need to replace some batteries). Beautiful day for a run but my body felt horrible. I've been running in colder, dryer weather. Back in Eugene, it's warmer and more humid. Don't know if that played a role but my lungs felt tight most of the run. Ran the whole way, guessing I averaged 8:30-9 min./mile.
